Life Event Checklist: Change of Employment
When life throws you a curve ball it is good to be prepared with a plan. With 30+ years of combined financial planning experience we have seen it all! Please feel free to utilize the following checklist to help navigate these uncertain times in your life.
Change Of Employment
- Retirement Plan Rollover - Does a rollover to an IRA make sense?
- Pension Benefits – Are you entitled to pension benefits? When is it best to take them?
- Life Insurance - Are you losing group life insurance?
- Disability Insurance - Are you losing group disability insurance?
- Health Insurance - Are you losing group health insurance? (Check with your spouse’s employer, often a qualifying event allows you to participate immediately in their coverage.)
- Auto Insurance – Travelling less to work? Call your agent to see if you can lower your rates.
- Credit Report Check – Always a good idea to ensure no identity theft, corporate credit cards closed, etc.
- Resume – Start preparing your resume while job experience is fresh.
- Social Profile – Update your profile to let prospective employers know you have entered the workforce and/or are no longer affiliated with your previous employer
- Thank You Letter – Never a good idea to burn bridges!
- Budget/Reduce Expenses – Does a reduction in income mean you should evaluate spending patterns?
- Roth IRA Eligibility – Does a reduction in income provide eligibility to make Roth IRA contributions?
- Unemployment Benefits – Don’t forget to apply for these important benefits!
- Email Notification – If using work email for friends, family, utility bills, etc., transition correspondence to a personal email address.
